Our current goals:

To maintain and improve educational excellence in writing instruction.

To foster an engaging and challenging curriculum through the use of technology.

To nurture and support students' health.

To increase communication among and between the school community.

Please contact Kristine Monje if you are interested in adding your voice to the process.

Dear Parents,

The new year has proven to be a busy time for our students. This week, as we wind down the second quarter of the school year, high school students have been hitting the books, preparing for their mid-term exams.

Our first snow day has moved our last school day to June 23rd. If your phone number has changed or if you did not receive our latest snow day Robo-Call, please contact us, so we can update your information.

We want to welcome back Mrs. Stacy Henshaw, our 2nd grade teacher, who has returned from maternity leave and welcome Ms. Maura Cousins, who has joined us as a teaching assistant.

Our basketball teams have been busy practicing and traveling to off-Island games, all while keeping up with their school work. We commend all our athletes, coaches and parents who make this all happen. Go Hurricanes!!

We are also thankful for our cultural enrichment programs for students. So far this year, students have been to the Newport Mansions, Rhode Island School of Design, Ice skating in downtown Providence, and have had a private pizza making lesson with a local chef. In the coming weeks, students will learn the art of glass blowing and will visit Trinity Repertory Theatre.

This time of year, we often find that the weather is difficult for outdoor recess. Please be sure that your child is dressed for the weather, so they can benefit from a little fresh air and some down time during their busy day.

Finally, please be on the look-out in the coming weeks for the Block Island School Friends' first annual Valentine's Day Candy Sale and our middle grades Annual Valentines Flower sale. All profits provide funding for many special extras that benefit our school community.

Have a safe and happy weekend!!

Students are expected to be on time for all their exams. A break will be provided between the two exam sessions. Students will be able to eat brunch in the cafeteria at 10:00. If for any reason your son/daughter is unable to take a scheduled exam, please call the school to report the absence. As expected, the coming few weeks before break are full of activity. The basketball season is upon us, and this means lots of travel and practices for our athletes. We still continue to try to find a system that meets all our needs for the supervision of athletes before practices. With everyone’s cooperation, Mr. Closter and I are hoping to find a better system that guarantees that students are safe after school.

On Monday, December 9th at 3p.m., 11th and 12th grade parents are invited to learn about how to finance college for their children.

Wednesday is the Holiday Piano Recital at the Parish Center. I encourage all community members to treat themselves to this magical night. It is always a showcase of talent and a reminder of how Carrie Todd provides such a vital gift to our community.

I remind parents to please complete the SurveyWorks Survey regarding our school. It is not only a forum for parents to give feedback, but also provides us with data to plan for the future of our school.

In order to foster a culture of continuous learning, yesterday a group composed of teachers, parents, and students visited two Providence charter schools to learn how they integrate technology into their day. This very interesting learning experience will be reviewed at our next School Committee meeting on Monday, December 16th. In fact, a portion of every School Committee agenda in the coming months will provide for discussion time to talk about our school’s future growth. I urge anyone to come to these meetings who would like to listen, learn and share ideas.

High school parents! Our first endeavor to send student progress reports from our Aspen portal through email will take place before vacation. Please be sure to notify the school if you have a new e-mail.

Wednesday, December 18th is our School Holiday Concert and on Thursday the 19th, grades 6-12 will be visiting the Newport Mansions to learn about Rhode Island’s link to the Gilded Age.

Have a great weekend!

Dear Parents,

We need your help! Now that basketball season is upon us, our building becomes a hub of activity for our kids. Karate, drama, the weight room, aerobics, recreation leagues and athletic practices all thankfully fill the lives of our children. As a school, we balance the desire to make this a community gathering spot with our need for security and safety. We are seeing many unsupervised children who are waiting for programs to begin. This is especially true on Tuesdays, while children move from Homework Club to a practice. We will continue to lock the hallway double doors to the main building, but we are asking parents to remember to be aware of what is happening with their children between activities, and to remind children of proper waiting etiquette. The front doors of the building are locked after school in order to limit access to the main building. Please drop off and pick up children at the back double doors on the playground for after school activities.

Thank you for your help and future cooperation,

Kristine Monje

It is hard to believe that our first quarter is behind us. Grades are being tabulated and report cards will go home next week.We want to thank the Block Island School Friends who generously purchased the entire Bill Nye the Science Guy DVD collection for our school. This collection of over 100 science themed shows provides students with great background knowledge to learn and understand often difficult science concepts.

Our soccer season is finished. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a great season. The busy basketball season begins soon. Please remember to check out the sports tab on our website for current schedules.

Please remember to be aware of your child's lunch account funds, in order to avoid carrying a negative balance.

We recently had 5 new interactive whiteboard projectors and 10 document cameras installed throughout the school. This new technology brings us very close to our goal of having this technology in every classroom in the school.

Remember this weekend is a three day weekend for students. Our staff will be hard at work Monday in a scheduled Professional Development Day. We will be exploring The Common Core Standards and learning from a special education expert.

Have a nice weekend!!

Dear Parents,
We are always saddened to hear of loss in our community. In response, we wanted to provide resources which might make conversations about grief and loss with children and adults a bit easier. These issues are a regular part of our Health curriculum, but individual needs arise independent of our teaching schedule. We also understand that parents know their children best and are best equipped to support them. Should you find you need help, below are some links regarding grief, support groups in Rhode Island and tips on how to talk to your children about grief and loss. We also have our school supports available and have alerted teachers to be on the lookout for signs of difficulty in our students. If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas as to other ways we can assist parents, please let us know.

The students have been working very hard in the last weeks to complete their NECAPs. We will be shipping the completed assessments off island next week and are all excited to get back to our routine of teaching and learning. Thank you to all the parents and teachers who helped bake each day to assure that our students had full bellies before each assessment.

Our 10th and 11th graders took PSAT assessments this week and grades 10-12 visited the campuses of New England Tech in order to get a first-hand look at their programs.

Our Student Council is up and running and they are planning their first student volleyball game on Wednesday, October 23rd from 6-8 p.m. The council has plans to make and sell class t-shirts in the high school to foster class spirit.

This week, the 6th graders explored their “roots” with the Roots and Wings program by taking an on-island overnight trip. As eighth graders, they will explore their “wings” with a trip to NYC.

On Saturday night, 10/19/13, middle grades students are invited to a Halloween get together in the cafeteria. This event, organized by student intern Kathleen Hemingway and Social Worker Summer Riker, is sure to be a fun time for all. Permission slips are required to attend.

This year we continue to be proactive in encouraging expected behaviors throughout the school through our Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) initiative. Our mantra is Be Positive, Be Responsible, Be Respectful. We are excited that this year the Island Free Library has partnered with us and will use PBIS as part of their program.

We are about two weeks away from the end of the first quarter. This is a very important time for students to do their best to make-up any missing work. High school parents and students should also check Aspen to see current grade status before quarter grades are finalized. Remember to call the school office if you have misplaced your password or have any questions about Aspen.

Principal's Message - Oct. 4

As many of you know, we have had issues with head lice at school. Earlier in the week, our school nurse checked the entire school and we had a recheck for effected classrooms today. All classroom pillows and blankets have been laundered and bagged up as per the CDC ‘s guidelines. I would encourage everyone to do his or her part until this passes.

NECAP’s continue next week. This is an important time for our students, thank you for all the snacks and helping to be sure students are well rested.

I would remind all students and parents that our current cell phone procedure states that all cell phones are to be put away during the school day. I have asked the high school students to join me in revisiting the procedure and look forward to working on a new procedure. Until then our current procedure remains in effect.

Thank you to all the parents who came to our first annual Parent’s Night. It was a huge success in fostering communication between home and school. Also, we had a nice turn out for our first of the year Block Island School Friend’s meeting. Thanks goes out to all those who volunteered and signed up to help this year.

Our new dismissal procedure is underway and we want to thank everyone who helped us make dismissal smoother and safer. We appreciate that everyone is giving it his or her best effort to make it work.
On Monday, September 30th we are organizing a night just for the parents of students in grades K-12. The purpose of this night is to set aside some time for parents to meet as a group with classroom teachers to hear about how students spend their day. Unlike the traditional Family Night (which we are planning for October) this is for parents only. Look for more details coming your way next week.
The state’s assessments, NECAPs, are coming up in October. We have a tight testing window and it is VERY important that students in grades 3-8 and grade 11 are in school during the first three weeks of October.
The Block Island School Friends are preparing for their first meeting and I cannot stress how much we depend on the efforts of this group. Whether it is organizing special enrichment programs, helping to fund field trips, or serving lemonade at athletic events, we depend on the work of this small, but dedicated, group. In the coming year, we will be trying extra hard to help invigorate this group with new energy from parents and teachers. I invite everyone to get involved to help with the work that makes such a big difference for our school.
As we approach the third week of school, high school parents can check the progress of their children on Aspen. If you have misplaced your password, please contact Lynne Cunningham in the office.
Finally, as the island quiets down, we have students riding their bikes to school. Please remember to remind your child about wearing a helmet.
