School is expected to reopen tomorrow (Wednesday) at the regular time. However, due to the closure of Spring Street the bus route will begin five (5) minutes earlier to allow for re-routing the bus out Pilot Hill, down Spring, and U-turning back to school. We hope this change proves sufficient but may need to re-adjust later if such proves necessary.

School is CANCELLED today, Monday, October 29th due to hurricane Sandy. With wind gusts forecasted at 50 mph in the morning and 70 mph during dismissal it was deemed too risky to have students, particularly young ones, outside walking and entering/leaving the bus. With the high wind warning scheduled to end at 6:00 AM tomorrow (Tuesday) hopefully we will have school.

Information on the school accident insurance is being sent home with the students in grades K-7. If you have a child in grades 8-12 and would like this information, please contact Marsha Gutierrez at 466-7732.

The New Shoreham School Department provides accident insurance through ISI New England for each student enrolled at Block Island School. You may purchase additional (24-hour) accident insurance for your child by filling out the enrollment form and mailing it with your premium payment to ISI New England. Individual coverage will not go into effect until both payment and application are received at ISI; a prompt response will maximize your premium dollar. Enrollment forms can be found online and downloaded. No response is necessary if you are not interested in the additional coverage.

The Block Island School is seeking community organizations and/or individuals to offer Friday afternoon student programs during the coming school year which begins on September 4, 2012. The school will be using a new schedule in September which will dismiss students after lunch on Fridays (with longer days Monday-Friday). The programs are sought to assist families in providing supervised activities for students on Friday afternoons when the school day ends. Karen LeRoy has agreed to run an SAT prep program for us this year. It will run on Wednesdays and Sundays from Feb. 29 - April 4th. The New Shoreham School Committee will hold a public workshop at 4:00 on Thursday, December 15 to review a proposal to alter the school schedule for the Block Island School. The proposal would add 30 minutes to the school day Monday through Thursday and dismiss school two hours earlier on Friday. Currently, student athletes can miss extensive class time competing in sports events and the schedule change is designed to recover that lost learning time. Following last year’s discussion and surveys, the School Committee is considering changing the format of the school calendar. Options under consideration:
1. Retaining the current format of two vacations, one in February and one in April.
2. Eliminating February and April vacations and establishing one March vacation.

As part of its review of the High School Proficiency Based Graduation policy the New Shoreham School Committee created a new level of diploma designed to recognize student excellence. The Regents Commended Diploma will be awarded to students who meet specific criteria recognizing a level of achievement that exceeds requirements and demonstrates excellence. A complete description is in the attached document.

The New Shoreham School Department provides accident insurance through ISI New England for each student enrolled at the Block Island School. You may purchase additional (24-hour) accident insurance for your child by filling out the enrollment form and mailing it with your premium payment to ISI New England. Payment options include check, money order, or credit card. Individual coverage will not go into effect until both payment and application are received by ISI; a prompt response will maximize your premium dollar. Brochures for the 24-hour accident insurance are being sent home with students. If you have any questions or need a brochure, please contact Marsha Gutierrez at 466-7732.

Parents - Point of Sale (POS) Lunch System - MyNutriKids - Starts up this Friday, January 14.
This Friday our POS lunch system goes live. Parents can set up online accounts now to pay for student lunches and see reports of what has been purchased. Letters describing the system along with student ID numbers were mailed home and should arrive early this week. The letter is linked below along with a link to the MyNutriKids web site.

While school closing and delay information is available through many media outlets, you can register for immediate mobile phone text and email notification. By doing so, as soon as a closing or delay decision is made, you will know immediately. To sign up, visit the linked web site. Additionally, attached is a letter regarding our phone notification system with information about how to manage the numbers on which you receive emergency and important notifications.

In an attempt to secure the school building, new electronic locks have been installed on the doors. The front door will only be open from 7:35 AM to 8:15 AM and 2:10 PM to 3:00 PM. All doors to the school will be locked throughout the rest of the day. A member of the office staff will be able to “buzz” visitors into the building.

All parents and students participating in athletics must read and sign the concussion pamphlet, participation, and physical form located under sport documents. Form must be returned to the Athletic office prior to participation
