Earlier this year personnel from the RI Department of Education visited the Block Island School to assess our work on the state's Proficiency-Based Graduation System. In the documents section of the website are (1) the Commissioner's letter reporting on the visit, (2) the Commissioner's parent letter, and (3) the school's work plan for completing the remaining tasks. This will be reported on at the June 21 School Committee meeting and the documents will also be in the online materials for that meeting.

The funeral for Mr. Young is planned for Saturday, May 15th at 10:00 a.m. at St. Bernard's Church (corner of Rt. 102 and Rt. 1 - Ten Rod Road & Tower Hill Road, across from Wickford Middle School). There will be no wake. Please note: on Saturday there is an 8:15 a.m. ferry off Island.

Yesterday (Monday) evening at 6:00 our test call of the emergency telephone notification system went out. We've heard from some that the message was cut off on their answering machine. The company running the system, Pre-K 12 Notification, tells us that if the message gets cut off on your answering machine, this means that the welcome message on your answering machine has a long pause in it. Just re-record your welcome message to solve the problem. Thanks for your help.

Our telephone notification system is up and running with a test call scheduled for 6:00 PM on Monday, April 5. Attached to this notice are instructions for managing your contact information.

Additionally, at its December meeting the School Committee authorized the acquisition of a phone notification system so that calls can be sent not only for closings and delays, but for numerous other school events and announcements. We'll let you know as soon as this is operational, which is expected to be soon.

CDC H1N1 e-mail scam alert The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)’s Cyber Security Incident Response Team (CSIRT) has received reports of fraudulent emails referencing a CDC-sponsored State Vaccination Program for H1N1 flu. Users that click on the embedded link in the email asking them to create a personal profile are at risk of having malicious code installed on their systems. To reduce the risk of being a victim of this cyber attack, do not follow unsolicited links or open or respond to unsolicited email messages and use caution when entering personal information online.

At its October 19th meeting the School Committee voted to post three policy revisions; Graduation Requirements, Travel Reimbursement, and Facility Use. The proposed revisions to these policies can be found in the documents secion of the website.

Welcome to the new website for the Block Island School and New Shoreham School Department. While now up and running, it remains a work in progress, so some sections are not yet operational. Our focus is to get needed information to the community as easily as possible; so you’ll see documents, forms, and handbooks here as well as schedules and contact information. We hope you find it useful and improving as time goes on.

Our website is volunteer-developed and it is essential to give a tremendous thank you to Howell Conant, who made it happen. His combination of community spirit, energy, and expertise came together in a way that exemplifies Block Island’s community values. His structure for this site provides a platform through which our school can increase its ability to communicate and interact with the community; a way for teachers and administrators to better engage you in your school.
